Born in Verona, Italy, Emma Schweinberger studied architecture at the University of Milan and in 1958 graduated with a degree in interior design from Switzerland’s Athenaeum Institute in Lausanne. She settled in Milan and became involved professionally and romantically with aeronautical engineer Ernesto Gismondi. In 1960, Gismondi co-founded Studio Artemide with Sergio Mazza. Emma Gismondi Schweinberger became one of the company’s designers. Based on his knowledge of missile engineering, Gismondi introduced the use of plastic in the design of Artemide objects. The founding of Studio Artemide coincided with the rising popularity of plastics; previously regarded as a lesser material, plastic became valued for its sculptural qualities, range of coloΘrs, low manufacturing cost and light weight.
